Simon Nagel drew this comic in a MAKE YOUR OWN COMIC workbook he bought at Target five years ago. During that period, the workbook had been packed for two international moves and stored in a nightstand drawer above the "good notebook” for special writing occasions. His partner Mandy — who is an actual illustrator — pressured him to get rid of the workbook several times since it seemed destined to remain untouched. Simon used this HAD call to finally prove his purchase worthwhile and quickly discovered that the pre-sized panels, which previously looked user friendly and helpful for a novice, actually hindered his process more than it helped. In fact, he sometimes skipped several pages to find the right panel and was forced to cut every single one of his drawings out so they could be rearranged in Photoshop. Mandy put on a brave face to help, as she was facing a publishing deadline but couldn’t stand watching Simon flounder. All in all, he should have just drawn CEO Chicken on blank sheets of paper, which he plans to do next time. Oh yes, there will be an Issue 2. Ideally, Simon wants CEO Chicken to have its own universe, which coincidentally intersects with the HAD & WAS Universe. The concept started with a series of chicken puns after passing “The Chicken Company" in Ojai, California, and eventually blended with the question: “What if Bruce Wayne put on his costume and got his ass kicked every night?” It has since taken on a life of its own.
