Obligations

John Chrostek

Carrie’s sitting at the DMV at 10:17 AM. It’s getting well into spring, when the day starts brisk and cool until the sun shines its ass off zero to sixty and suddenly everything’s alive again. She’s lost in thought thinking about the girl she met last night coming back from a show. Cute little fairy nose, eyes that screamed with thunder. She got her number real casual, blink-and-you-miss-it kinda deal. It was just about the hottest moment of her life.

“Next.”

It’s 12:30 and Carrie’s on the way to her car.

A flicker of shadow passes in front of the sun.

She looks up, covering her eyes.

There’s people, thousands of them, all floating up into the sky.

The light is blinding.

Carrie unlocks her car door, watching everyone shed their clothes and sing.

She wonders what traffic will be like on her way back home.
